Codec Is A Free Plugin For Modern Degradation

Lese.io has released Codec, a free VST3/AU plugin labeled as a modern degradation tool.

Many other plugins simulate degradation in “old school” ways (vinyl, tape, or cassette), but Codec relies on internet compression algorithms. Is essentially a container that holds an audio compressor (not that kind of compressor) so you can compress and then decompress your sound, in real-time, in your DAW of choice.

Features

  • Bitrate adjustment for real-time packet size constraint
  • Bandwidth selector feature, allowing for bandwidth adjustment beyond filtering out artifacts
  • Coloration (crunch) option
  • Packet loss simulation
  • A funky visualizer
  • Fully vectorized, resizable interface

The good news, besides that is free, is Codec has plugin variants for both Windows and macOS (VST3 and AU). So nothing stops you to destroy your sound in a creative & modern way.
